Renowned photographer, Eugène Atgetis at the heart of an exhibition being staged at the Carnavalet Museum, from the 25th April to 29th July 2012. A chance for today’s generations to discover the other sides of Paris.

The works of Eugène Atget permeated with surrealism

Through a selection of 230 prints, Eugène Atget invites visitors to rediscover the City of Lights. This journey back in time has more than a few surprises in store as the authentic charm of the capital is fully revealed through these prints. From its streets to its old shops, unknown scenes and images await the public.

Thanks to the Carnavalet Museum’s own collections and to the contributions of George Eastman House in Rochester and the Fundación Mapfre in Madrid, visitors can follow the evolution of this artist who brought to life the characteristic landscapes and motifs of Paris.

Eugène Atget undoubtedly influenced the Surrealists and the Carnavalet Museum reveals this aspect of his art through a room entirely devoted to the presentation of an album, now in Rochester in the United States.

In this unique space, visitors can discover 43 prints as well as learn about another, lesser-known genius who followed on from Atget, Emmanuel Pottier, and who explored the same universe, namely Paris in its most atypical attire.

From the Foire Saint-Antoine to the Foire du Trône

The Foire Saint-Antoine known as the Gingerbread fair, nowadays called the Foire du Trône, was created in 957. Saint-Antoine abbey, having been authorised to sell gingerbread during Holy Week in honour of its patron saint, sold its produce on the Place du Trône (now called Place de la Nation). A runaway success, the market was forced to change location several times, finally moving to the Pelouse de Reuilly in the Bois de Vincennes in 1965.

Consisting originally of stalls of gingerbread and cakes together with the sale of trinkets and acrobatic displays, the Foire du Trône now brings together thousands of fairground people with their thrilling rides, stalls and all kinds of produce, as well as attracting millions of visitors from the world over!

You still have until 3rd June 2012 to enjoy the Foire du Trône funfair !

It was in the 1970s that the city of Paris planned to renovate the neighborhood of Paris-Bercy. The Palais Omnisport was a part of the urban development project in this sector. It would also benefit from access near the Gare de Lyon, RER, the subway, the expressway right bank and the ring road.

In May 1979, the city of Paris launched an audit with 16 teams of architects to build the Sports Centre of the city, in the future park at Bercy.

On July 23 1979, the candidates delivered their projects, and on the October 23 1979, the city designated the team Andrault-Parat, Prouvé, Guvan laureate of the contest, and confided to her the execution.

The study work began at the end of October 1979, the construction of the foundations began in February 1981 and the building itself the March 30 1981 and ended two and a half years later, in December 1983.

It was opened February 3, 1984 by Jacques Chirac at the time the mayor of Paris.

This equipment was among the first to develop the east of Paris (well before the François-Mitterrand Library, the Parc de Bercy, and the Ministry of Finance). It marks the entrance to Northwest Park Bercy.

It is within this area that archaeologists discovered the remains of the oldest human occupation in Paris. Excavations were undertaken in the district of Bercy and helped to uncover the remains of a village in the prehistoric period (between 4000 and 3800 BC.), which was established on the left bank the former branch of the Seine, revealing a unique archaeological material : wooden canoes, all kinds of pottery, arrows and bows, bone tools and stone.

Bercy was better known by the time of Louis Le Gros.

Then it is in the 12th century that appeared for the first time the name of Bercy or Bercix in real estate documents. The estate belonged to a time by the Montmorency family before being recovered by Malons who will develop and transform by Le Vau in the 17th century, a fortified manor in beautiful castle. At the same time, the nobility and the bourgeoisie built their country houses along the Seine.

In the 19th century the town of Bercy is dissolved and its territory spread beetween Paris and Charenton. The area will be gradually dismantled to allow the construction of the railway from Paris to Lyon, the expansion of the Bois de Vincennes and in particular the consolidation of the wine warehouses by Viollet-le-Duc.

The latter, installed in the 18th century outside the fence for granting Rapee, then they are growing. The barrels for Paris arrive by boat and were landed and stored in the cellars of Bercy. This activity will continue thriving until the mid-20th century.

In the late 20th century, the renovation of the district spell the end of storage, but their memory will endure in the park that has been replaced and that even in the name of the metro station that serves it : Cour Saint-Emilion. It is their architecture, which was the identity of the neighborhood, which also inspired the establishment of a commercial and leisure information Bercy Village with its shops and terraces. To the east of this area was laid out a business district organized around the role of wine in France.
